Notice the pledge of allegiance is recited without "under god." because the phrase "under god" was added in June 1954 to associate godliness with patriotism. The reason was to fight Russian communism, making our country more god loving and our enemies less godly and more savage in the eyes, minds, and hearts of the American people.
